Abstract
Formerly referred to as Local Geological Sites.

Regionally Important Geological/Geomorphological Sites are non-statutory earth science sites. The RIGS networks are locally based voluntary groups drawing on both professional and interest groups identifying sites using a methodical and rational approach. RIGS are analogous to non-statutory biological sites - they are not a second tier but sites of regional or local importance in their own right. They are a subset of classifications within the Local Records Centre Sites database.

The concept of RIGS was first initiated by the Nature Conservancy Councils (NCC) publication Earth Science Conservation in Great Britain - A Strategy (1990).

RIGS were originally SSSIs denotified after the Geological Conservation Review (1977-1990). The statutory agencies wished to secure their conservation in another form. RIGS sites are those which, whilst not benefiting from national statutory protection, are nevertheless regionally or locally representative sites where '...consideration of their importance becomes integral to the planning process' according to the Earth Science Conservation Strategy (ESCS).
